These South Eastern&Chatham Railway designed vans featured an elliptical roof, end ventilators, used the standardised steel underframe as used with the 2, 5&7 plank wagons, lift-link brake gear and self-contained buffers. These vans became so successful that they became the basis of a standard design on the Southern Railway, with nearly 250 being built many survived into BR days, with one being preserved at the Bluebell Railway.
