As with Britain’s railways, following World War 2 the privately owned collieries of the United Kingdom were nationalised with the creation of the National Coal Board (NCB) who took control from 1st January 1947. The National Coal Board acquired almost 1000 collieries, many of which had their own internal railway systems and connections to the main railway network. As you can imagine, the locomotives and rolling stock which operated on these internal railways was an eclectic mix ranging from redundant pre-grouping examples to locomotives and stock built on mass by the likes of Peckett and Hudswell Clarke specifically for industrial use.

As you can imagine, the locomotives and rolling stock which operated on these internal railways was an eclectic mix ranging from redundant pre-grouping examples to locomotives and stock built on mass by the likes of Peckett and Hudswell Clarke specifically for industrial use.

As British Railway’s fleet expanded, surplus locomotives and stock which had been replaced or become redundant – but was too good to be scrapped – was sold into industrial use. The NCB purchased significant quantities to and replace ageing resources and expand their operations. Several BR 20T Brake Vans – amongst other items – were purchased by the NCB for use at Ashington in Northumberland. Our model depicts NCB No. 9300/8 which originally carried No. B952963 and was built at the former North Eastern wagon works at Faverdale, Darlington, as part of an order for 400 brake vans built to diagram 1/504 during 1955. No. 9300/8 was observed working at Ashington during both the 1980s and 90s.

Based on the popular Bachmann Branchline model, our limited edition Brake Van is of the flush sided variety and features separately fitted hand-rails, metal wheels and NEM coupling pockets.
